Going into the race Mark Skaife and co-driver Garth Tander seemed so much faster than everyone else that victory in the 2006 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 looked theirs for the taking. But nothing can ever be taken for granted at Mount Panorama. Skaife and Tander were indeed the hot favourites, but within seconds of the start their race was run – and done. A clutch drama off the line saw Skaife struggle to get away, with the crippled HRT Commodore being clouted heavily from behind by Jack Perkins’ Commodore as they crested the rise the first time up Mountain Straight. With the most fancied Holden a shock early retirement, instead it was left to Ford to take the victory in what was the first Bathurst 1000 win for a Falcon in eight long years. It was also a young Jamie Whincup’s first Bathurst win, and the second for Craig Lowndes – a whole 10 years after his first win. It might have been a day of disappointment for Holden, but it was a fitting victory for Lowndes as it had been barely month after the shock death of Peter Brock. The Great Race that year became something of a memorial to the nine-times winner, with the Peter Brock Trophy being awarded for the first time. Up on the podium as he held the newly minted trophy aloft, an emotional Lowndes could not hold back the tears. He and Brock had been team-mates at the HRT during Lowndes’ breakout 1996 season; Brock had been his friend and his mentor.
