Victory in the 2012 Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000 was Jamie Whincup’s fourth Bathurst 1000 win, but it was the first time he’d done it in a Holden. It was also the first Bathurst win for his Triple Eight Holden Commodore co-driver Paul Dumbrell, who had benefitted from the recent rule change that prevented teams from pairing their two regular full-time drivers in the one car. Dumbrell was recently retired from full-time driving, and so the Triple Eight recruited him for the 2012 enduros.

It was certainly a hard-fought win. In the final green-flag run to the finish, Whincup had to withstand attack from James Courtney, whose HRT Commodore had a slight fuel range advantage. Whincup resisted Courtney’s challenge, banging in some quick laps and ignoring team orders to conserve fuel in the process. This was a strategy that would cost Whincup victory in 2014, but on this day the risk paid off.

But in the end it was Courtney who was his biggest problem; rather, it was the David Reynolds/Dean Canto Falcon. Decked out in 1967 Harry Firth/Fred Gibson style livery (as part of the retro theme in what was the 50th running of the race at Mount Panorama). As Courtney dropped back with worn tyres, Reynolds stepped up to put the pressure on by Whincup held on – finishing the race with an almost bone-dry fuel tank.

On a weekend that celebrated the rich history of the race, one of our all-time greatest touring car drivers delivered the performance of his life.
