The 2007 Bathurst 1000 was a race in two halves. The first half was largely free of caution periods, and that meant on a dry track the fuel strategies could be played out. What this showed was that the Triple Eight Falcon of Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup looked like they had a winning balance between pace and fuel economy – an ace up their sleeve come the final stops. Indeed, as that final, critical, run to the flag approached, they enjoyed a clear fuel consumption advantage that should have seen Lowndes resume after the last scheduled fuel stops as the clear race leader. But sensationally Whincup almost threw it away by spinning at the pit entry at the end of his last stint. That left Lowndes to rejoin in fourth place with about 30 laps to go, and a lot of work to do. Fortunately for them, Whincup wasn’t the last driver to spin that day. A late downpour threw everything into chaos – suddenly the out-of-sync Jason Bright looked set to bag a shock win as everyone was forced into the pits for wet tyres. But Bright’s race ended in the wall 12 laps from home – along with Mark Skaife and Russell Ingall. Also coming to grief in the slippery conditions was Mark Winterbottom with a wild spin into the Chase just as he had taken the lead, just as he looked on course for his first Bathurst win. Through it all the safe hands of Lowndes guided the Triple Eight Falcon to a deserved victory.
