Supercars 2011 Super Cheap Auto Bathurst 1000 The Complete Race

Garth Tander didn’t win many races in 2011, and neither did the Holden Racing Team. It just hadn’t been their year, and they certainly didn’t go to Bathurst that year as favourites. The sad fact in 2011 was that the Holden Racing Team now was Holden’s front-line V8 Supercars operation in name only. The reality was that former Ford team turned Holden outfit, Triple Eight, with its star aces Craig Lowndes and Jamie Whincup, was the team doing most of the winning for Holden.

But Bathurst is a different race from any other, and on the day on the Mountain in 2011 everything fell into place for the HRT. It was Tander’s third Great Race win, and the first for co-driver Nick Percat – on debut as a rookie. Percat had come through the ‘development’ series ranks but was still very inexperienced – and yet apart from a couple of near misses in the wet, he displayed the flawless poise of a veteran.

They only narrowly headed the Craig Lowndes/Mark Skaife Triple Eight Commodore home, leaving a distraught Skaife just a fraction of a second short of scoring a seventh Bathurst win in what was his final start.

It was not a good day for Ford; FPR had pace and looked threatening but both cars had issues; the Stone Brothers Falcons didn’t have the pace but were running a fuel consumption strategy that might have paid dividends had both the Alex Davison/David Brabham and Shane van Gisbergen/John McIntyre cars not got involved in on-track incidents.

Dick Johnson Racing had a fraught day, culminating in a fiery exit for the Steven Johnson/David Besnard Falcon. Besnard backed it into the wall heavily at Griffin’s Bend on his outlap from a stop to change brake pads. It can’t have pleased Dick Johnson, but it did provide the TV broadcast – and indeed the entire world’s news broadcast networks – with spectacular footage of the contents of the wrecked Falcon’s torn fuel cell burning (fairly harmlessly) where it spilled out onto the track.
