Experience triumphed over competition at Bathurst in 2005, as Mark Skaife clinched victory despite Ford’s Marcos Ambrose leading the championship battle. Ambrose and the Stone Brothers Racing team encountered a setback in the infamous ‘balaclava incident,’ which resulted in a costly pitlane penalty for their oversight. Nevertheless, Skaife and co-driver Todd Kelly executed a flawless finish, propelled by a meticulously planned strategy from the Holden Racing Team. Even amidst challenges faced by Craig Lowndes and co-driver Yvan Muller, including a smashed windscreen, they persevered by donning multiple sets of racing overalls to combat the freezing cold.
Despite Ford’s impressive pole position in qualifying, the duo of Jamie Whincup and Jason Richards, supported by co-driver Adam Macrow, secured second place in their Tasman Motorsport Commodore, extending Ford’s run of misfortune at Bathurst. The top-performing Ford Falcon belonged to the second Triple Eight entry driven by Steve Ellery and Adam Macrow, claiming third place. Holden celebrated a historic seventh consecutive Bathurst win, with Todd Kelly sealing his first Great Race victory on his 26th birthday.
