2013 Super Cheap Auto Bathurst 1000 The Complete Race
Victory at Bathurst in 2013 for the Prodrive/Ford Performance Racing team had been a long time coming. Going into the season, the operation that had been setup in the early 2000s as the nominal Ford factory team – the Ford equivalent of the Holden Racing Team – was still to win at Bathurst and still to score its first Supercars championship title. But it all came together for drivers Mark Winterbottom and Steven Richards in 2013.
They’d been beaten into pole by the previous year’s winner Jamie Whincup; in the race, the Whincup/Paul Dumbrell Triple Eight Commodore VF proved to be the biggest threat to Winterbottom/Richards.
It came down to a climactic finish as Whincup stalked leader Winterbottom through the dramatic final laps. Into Griffin’s Bend for the final time, Whincup drew alongside the FPR Falcon FG in a last-ditch attempt to take the lead, but slid wide and lost crucial momentum. Winterbottom skipped away to eke out a small margin, and kept his challenger at bay for the rest of the lap to score a historic victory for Ford. It was Winterbottom’s first Bathurst win but it was the third for Richards.
For Winterbottom, it was the long-awaited big win that had eluded him for so many years – for the last seven seasons he’d placed no lower than fifth in the championship, with neither a Bathurst win or a championship crown to show for his efforts.
Craig Lowndes and Warren Luff made it a Triple Eight two-three in their Commodore VF – a fine team result but ultimately a disappointment for an organisation that had won five of the previous seven Bathurst 1000s.
